Black Cake by Charmaine Wilkerson

This one was for the 52 book club challenge, the prompt: a book written by a Carribean author. I am so thankful for doing that challenge, because this book was absolutely wonderful. I don't normally stray from the fantasy world, so for me to enjoy this as much as I did, I know it was something special.

A story of family, tradition, heritage and belonging, Black Cake is the story of Coventina Lynchcook and how she managed to escape a life determined for her entirely by others and create a legacy her children could be proud of.

This book was filled with feelings. Relevancy; in your face reality about race and discrimination across generations and continents alike. Hiding in plain sight to avoid one danger and risking others to keep the secret. This book is not only about the live of one woman, but of the heritage, traditions, and values that people take with them through their lives, no matter where they may go, or who they may "be".
