Samantha is starting the night shift at a new hospital, trying to escape her past and her awful father. Atticus has been working in this ED for over a decade and has a method of doing things. Most nights are eventful, but none moreso than Sam's first shift with him. A case too close to home for her, a grumpy attitude from him, and a weird conversation and nickname later and they're both intrigued.
Sam begins to make friends and get into a rhythm finally, and then her car battery dies. Atticus offers her a ride home, and sees an encounter between Sam and what turns out to be her dad. From that point on, he is in full protector mode, whether he realizes it or not. A getaway to a cabin in the woods turns into much more than a retreat between friends, but life follows them and shocks reality back into them.
Worried about being hurt, Sam pushes Atticus away, and the idiot actually listens. When things become dangerous for Sam, however, Atticus is there and keeping her as safe as he possibly can. But even his fancy security systems can be infiltrated by the danger that's coming for Sam.
This was exciting and dangerous, and the chemistry between Sam and Atticus was so, so hot!
